The Raj Punnah: A Historic Tradition
A glimpse into the Raj Punnah, the grand annual ceremony where Headmen gather at the Royal Court to pay revenue and reaffirm their loyalty to the Circle Chief.

The Raj Punnah is the most significant ceremonial event in the Chakma Circle’s calendar. Historically, this event marks the annual tax collection day, but its cultural importance far outweighs its fiscal purpose.
During the Raj Punnah, Headmen from hundreds of Mouzas gather at the Royal Court in Rangamati. Dressed in traditional ceremonial attire, they pay the annual Jhum tax and offer symbolic gifts to the Circle Chief. In return, the King addresses his people, outlining the vision for the coming year and listening to the challenges faced by the Headmen.
The event is accompanied by a massive traditional fair (Mela). Artisans from remote hills bring their handloom textiles (‘Pinon Hadi’), handicrafts, and agricultural produce. It serves as a vibrant marketplace and a meeting ground for people from all walks of life, reinforcing the deep bond of loyalty between the Circle Chief and his subjects.
